Old Miss Mackie has garden gnomes living in the back of her garden: Basil, Bud, Marigold, and the two little gnomes, Lily and Quince. Miss Mackie looks after the gnomes, sewing their clothes and reading fairytales to them, and in turn the gnomes look after her big garden, working hard to keep it beautiful. When she falls ill, Miss Mackie has to leave her much-loved home. The gnomes promise her that they will care for the garden, and look after each other. But one day developers come to knock the house down, and the gnomes realise, finally, that their old friend isn't coming back. It's time for them to leave and find a new home. In order to do that, they have to find Miss Mackie - and that means going out into the real world for the very first time.
