James Aldridge has enjoyed a long and distinguished career as one of Australia's most important writers for children. In 1938 he went to London and eventually became a war correspondent in Finland, Egypt and then the Soviet Union, working for the Australian Newspaper Service, the North American Newspaper Alliance of New York and also for Time and Life. During the war, he wrote his first novel, and after the war he decided to become a full-time writer. He has lived in the United States, London and Europe, with long visits home to Australia. He was awarded the Rhys Memorial Prize in 1944 and the Lenin Peace Prize in 1972.
