DESCRIPTION:

Through crisp, clear appealing captioned photographs and a brief text, readers are introduced to the history and customs of Christmas: where it is celebrated throughout the world, and how it is celebrated—with "carols, presents, and peace," and special meals. Children performing in a pageant in Israel, a man decorating his house in Germany, and a view of Rockefeller Center at Christmastime can all be seen on these pages. They are not all snow-filled, however. There is a photo of Santa arriving in an outrigger canoe on Waikiki Beach. The large type and clean layout with plenty of white space make this appropriate for primary grade use. There is a seven-word glossary that includes such words as Lutefisk, myrrh, and solstice. For teachers, parents, and older children, there is an essay by The Reverend Nathan J. A. Humphrey, an Episcopal priest in Washington, D.C., at the back of the book. In it he discusses the history of the holiday, and commercialism, and the real meaning of Christmas. Included are directions for making a memory book, and a recipe for making the Swallow Family Christmas Cake. There are also recommended books and websites, and an explanation of the Epiphany or Three Kings Day celebration. Part of the "Holidays Around the World" series, this also includes a world map that highlights the countries where the photos were taken. Primary grade children will broaden their perspectives about the world with this book. Reviewer: Sharon Salluzzo
